How We Built a 58,000L Natural Wildlife Pond (No Pumps, No Filters)
18/02/2026
This project was designed as a natural wildlife pond with no pumps or mechanical systems required. Approximately 58,000lts, it used both the butyl liner and protective layer, but deliberately we decided to install them back to front as we weren’t worried about the butyl liner being punctured by sharp rocks as the pond in naturally lined by alluvial clay. Placing the protective layer on the inside meant we could protect from other puncture threats such as heron and large dogs. Plus plants have something to grip onto with the protective layer offering a mesh for roots to get into.
The pond is now a natural haven for everything from fresh water shrimp, newts, frogs, insects and of course, in summer, we get the ducks and birds and yes, the heron is a regular visitor.
